World War II Research Project
Purpose: To research a topic related to World War II and to report your findings in a thesis paper.
Requirements:
• Appropriate use of class time.
• Note cards for all information contained in the paper.
• The paper must refer to at least five different sources. Three of the sources must be books, and one of the books may be a reference book. Any internet site used must be from Foote Library’s prescreened sites OR it must be OK’d by Ms. Lavey or Mr. Considine
• The paper must contain at least three direct quotations preferably from three different sources.
• Paper format: 3-5 pages; 12 point default font; double spacing (2.0)
• Final portfolio includes: all note cards, paper, title page, citations, and a Works Cited/References page (aka bibliography).
Schedule: See Change Posted Below Posted on Monday, April 30
April 9 - 10: “pre-search” begins
April 10-11; topic choices due; please pick at least 4, 5 would be better
April 11- 22; research
April 16: preliminary thesis due
April 24-25; outline and note cards are due; you may continue to research
****May 7 May 2-3; first draft due
May 11; final draft and portfolio due
Please note that a bibliography is required for the first as well as the final draft, as is a title page. As things come up, dates may change; we will try to give you advance notice. This is a very tight schedule with very little extra room in it; please maximize your library time.
¬? note: there will be periodic note checks. Failure to come to class with all necessary materials will result in a lower grade and a zero for that day. Because your classmates will also be embarking on this quest, you cannot take books out of the library until study hall and you must return them during homeroom the next day. Do not lose your borrowing privilege for a day!
¬? Many of these sources are also available at your local library so you might wish to check them out there. In addition, researching at home is both an obligation and responsibility. Researching nightly at home will enable you to stay on task and meet deadlines.
Process:
1. Spend time in “pre-search” in the library exploring possible topics that interest you and that have enough relevant material available.
2. Develop a list of three to four possible topics, ranked in order, to be submitted to your teacher by April 10-11.
3. Your topic will be selected from the list you submit.
4. Begin researching your topic and take notes. We will spend several days in the library where you will have access to a wide variety of books and other resources. You will also need to work at home. Online references available in school are accessible at home. You may access it this way: http://www.footeschool.org/academic/library/Grade8.html
5. Keep careful bibliographic records of every source you use; in fact, getting the bibliography information down accurately is one of the very first steps you should take when using a source. Make sure you use the correct type of bibliography for the source you are using. The library provides sheets for you to fill out, but they must correspond with the type of source used. For example, if you use ICONN or any other database (Facts on File, for example), fill out a bibliography sheet for a database. It is NOT the same as an online source or book! Be careful!
6. Focus your research on just your narrowed topic.
7. Develop a thesis statement.
8. Organize your note cards around your thesis statement.
9. Create an outline.
10. Complete a rough draft complete with proper citations. Pay close attention to the handouts on citing materials
11. The final paper will be due in the portfolio envelope being provided. In that envelope will be all research notes (organized), your outline, first and final drafts.
12. You will need to provide index cards for researching.
13. Extra help is available, but many of your questions might be answered by looking carefully at the research paper guide you will receive at the start of this | |
