Exam Question:
Drawing upon the information you have studied in chapters 28 and 29 in T.A.N., answer the
following question in a formal persuasive essay:
As the US has entered the 21st century as the sole superpower should it seek to
A) return to its isolationist “ republic” past?
B) seek to make the world a more democratic, humane place through
engagement?
or C) is there no “choice” left about this issue anymore?
Alternate Topic:
As we have studied the history of the United States from Reconstruction to Civil Rights movement, from the Spanish-American War to the Cold War, we have returned to the theme of power.
The question within the country has been “What should the the role of government be in the lives of its citizens?” ( the conservative vs. liberal question)
The question as the United States veered from George Washington’s advice has been “What should be America’s role on the World Stage?” (the isolationist vs. internationalist argument)
Using three strong examples from our studies answer the one of the above questions from one point of view.
Review Tips:
1. mastering concepts: review the “Reading Focus” located at the beginning of each section in
TAN.
2. Start reviewing the older material first.
3. Don’t ignore class notes and handouts. They will clue you into what I find to be
“ most important” and will help you to anticipate the focus of the exam.
4. Review sessions should be active. Come to class with questions for me, not vice versa.
